14"x18" oil on board.
You may have seen this one if you have been around for a while, but it never got posted. This was painted in 2005 and I really still like it a lot. It is one of those paintings that maybe you get lucky with but it is better then what you are capable of at the time. Though it is a little too tight it has some really nice edges that keep it feeling like an oil painting.
New great artist link; If your not already aware of Lucong he is a fantastic painter with a interesting subdued mood to his work. I like the portraiture that he is able to make accessible. It's not easy to paint a portrait that is appealing to everyone beyond just the subjects family.

Wow, so is this not an actual oil painting? is it digital? How on earth did you create the suttle texture? This is beautiful, love, love, love it!
You mentioned that it is a little too tight of a painting. Do you normally like to leave things looser as a stylistic choice?
Jennifer, thanks but I hope you dont change your mind because it is an oil painting.
Jeremy, I just try to stay away from photo realism. I like the painterly stylization which I think adds more life and creativity.
David,
I understand what you are getting at in regards to how tight the rendering is, however, you should be quite proud of the work. From what I can see from this repro, she appears lovely, dignified and very real rather than plastic which is a testament to how well it is done. Nice work man.
Wow, this is just gorgeous! Amazing. I love your work!
Breath taking work. Excellent.
No, I think I love it even more. (Digital it's easier to cheat with an eyedropper anyhow) *but of course if you actually want to learn something it would be dumb to cheat. NO- the fact that it's oil makes it even more amazing. (If it was digital, that texture would be the most amazing thing to have pulled off. I also agree with Dave. You've done well on making it more "real" than "photo-blah"-like. Sort of like Bill Whitaker. Do you live in the Provo area? (I saw a piece at a show at the health and justice building) Do you ever let crazy people like me take a tour of your studio or come see some of your works in life? Love to, if that wouldn't be freako weird?
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Mr.Malan

So much time I didn't post a comment here. Just a little one to say that I'm very impressed by the variety and the quality of your last artworks. I really want to be David Malan (and Ryan Wood too, and Adam Ford... and, and... aaarhh ! :))

It's not too tight! It's beautiful.
