Brompton oratory

This is a recent oil painting. It's about 18"x24". I was excited by the idea but once I started into all that architectural detail I changed my mind. But all the work turned out well. I don't think the face is really that red, but I like the composition. The setting is this really great hidden cathedral in London called the Brompton oratory, which is just filled to the brim with gaudy details, I dig gaudy details(unless I am painting them).

  2. I'm surprised you haven't gotten more comments for this piece. It's wonderful. Yes, the figure does look a little unstuck from the rest of the picture, but it's a beautiful composition, and there's great attention to detail in the background without getting too busy. Frankly, even with its flaws, I like this picture as much or more than many of the ones by your favorite realist painters you listed earlier!

By the way, your sketches were inspiring, too. The line work was so precise and confident, I can't even begin to imagine how you do it. (OK, many years of sketching every day might have something to do with it.)

  10. Well, I think it's VERY impressive. Sometimes you just have to be the slave of your ideas so that other people get to label it 'real genius'.

  11. Had to giggle at your 'hidden cathedral' - considering Bromptom Oratory is one of the most celebrated churches in London - which you have beautifully captured the essence of here! Your work is lovely, thanks for sharing it.
    Jules.
