A recent figure drawing. This model obviously didn't feel the need to comb his hair for this session.
I think my drawings from life have a different indefinable quality to them then those done from photos. Maybe less refined but more natural? I don't know.
oh I agree totally - drawing from the live model is about capturing the life and energy of a living thing...when you draw from a photograph, you have to manufacture that life.
ReplyDeletewonderful drawing.
Love your Sketches !!! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove the pencil strokes. How is your baby? God has also gifted another son to me on 9th march.
ReplyDeletegreat one!!
ReplyDeleteHey David,
ReplyDeleteHave you tried the way Bacon is said to do, using very small, poor quality photos of the subjects and filling in the gaps with impressions and guesses?
I love your work man! Especially your pencil lines:)
Cheers

Interesting comment about drawing from life vs drawing from reference photos. I've heard purists say that one should ONLY draw from life, but I think that's silly. Both serve their purposes, and as an art model I've modeled for reference photos as well as live for classes and professional artists.
ReplyDeleteI think a big difference is that with a reference photo, the artist is limited to working with the composition and angle captured by the photo. Whereas in a live situation, the artist can move to get a different angle, move closer or further back, etc. In other words, in a live situation, the artist can make more decisions; with a photo, the photographer already made some of those decisions.
ditto.
