I've been thinking about how I am often more happy with my quick drawings than I am with my much more time consuming oil paintings. Mainly it's the many years of practice in my sketchbook that has allowed more freedom and confidence in my linework, I am trying to get more of that into my paintings. So I did this drawing to transfer into a painting in the hopes that it will help me with a loose painting that I am happy with.I did one with the baby drawing below that I am pleased with and will post in a few days.
There is nothing wrong about being satisfied with a fast sketch. There are times for long works, and time for fast concepts, both are great if you enjoy each part of the preccess.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful drawing! I thing most of us struggle to get that type of freedom and confidence in painting. You'll get it I'm sure of it. You might want to try bigger brushes, thicker paint , holding your brush farther back on the handle. Looking forward to seeing the painting.

ReplyDeletewell, i don't know a single artist completely satisfied with his art, but i'm sure, as it has already been said before, that you'll get the "style" you're looking for. (things like your "twain" piece I guess)
ReplyDeleteyour paintings (and your drawings) are a real influence and easily recognizable, there is this "Malanian" great style we're a lot to be fond of but I'm curious to see where these "loosy" things could take you.
and, by the way, great drawing as usual. I really dig the subtle lightings on the ears, and the top of her neck on this one.

ReplyDeleteDavid, This drawing is extremely beautiful. Sometimes only a simple and quick sketch or loose painting can express the original idea, and it doesn't always need to be turned into a "finished" piece. It is done, and perhaps this drawing of the young girl is already everything it needs to be. I too have been trying to loosen up my own work recently and just posted a piece on my blog about what Harold Speed called "dither", or the balance between artistic expression and realistic accuracy.
